English

In our school we wish to instil in our children a love of language, reading and writing. A key life skill is to be able to communicate effectively; therefore we place a strong emphasis on all areas of literacy. English is taught daily as a core subject and through the rest of our curriculum. In Key Stage 1 children are heard to read regularly primarily using the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme. Many other books are available to enhance their reading skills. Read, Write, Inc is used to teach early phonics, in readiness for the phonic screening test in Y1. As the children progress through school, other schemes are used in tandem with ORT. Once children become more fluent and confident in their reading, we encourage them to read more widely and independently. We use The Power of Reading and Wordsmith to help plan and deliver exciting and thought provoking English lessons based around a fiction or non-fiction book.
