In Nursery (spring term onwards), Reception and KS 1 we learn to read using the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme.
Read Write Inc. Phonics is a rigorous and dynamic teaching programme, proven to create fluent, enthusiastic readers, confident speakers and willing writers by the age of six or seven.
“Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.
They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.
Along with a thought-provoking introduction, prompts for thinking out loud and discussion, children are helped to read with a storyteller’s voice.”
We teach phonics for 45 minutes daily. Pupils are taught in ability groups thus enabling them to be taught according to their reading level not their age. Teaching is very precise and tailored to the needs of each child irrespective of year group.
For those children needing a little more help to keep up, we deliver Fast Track Tutoring either individually or in small groups. This is delivered by the phonics lead.
