Year 1

Year 1
Welcome to 1G
The children have entered Key Stage 1 beautifully, and we are already having so much fun getting to know one another and working well together as a team. We have lots of work to cover this year. We will be focusing on letter formation, as it is vital to start letters from the correct place, write them in the right size, and keep them on the line.
We will continue teaching phonics through Read. Write. Inc. every morning. Books are changed every Monday, so please ensure book bags are in school every day, as we aim to read with your child on multiple occasions throughout the week. Children are expected to read a minimum of four times per week at home. It is essential that your child reads the same book multiple times, which has clear benefits for developing their reading skills:
- First read – Decoding: sounding out words, recognising letters, and figuring out unfamiliar words.
- Second read – Fluency: reading more smoothly, paying attention to phrasing and pacing.
- Third read – Expression: adding expression, intonation, and emotion to make the reading sound natural.
- Fourth read – Comprehension and Confidence: with decoding and fluency mastered, your child can focus on understanding the story, answering questions, and enjoying the text.
We also allow the children to choose a book from our class library if they wish, which must be returned.
Children can have fruit (or another healthy snack) – NO NUTS – for morning break. All children must have a water bottle, which should be taken home daily for washing.
All uniforms, including PE kits, must be clearly labelled. Children are to bring their PE kit with pumps into school in their PE bag and will get changed in school on their PE day, which is Tuesday.
9 am – “Hurry in, let the phonics begin”
We want your children in school every day, enjoying learning and exploring new ideas, and growing alongside their friends. Regular attendance helps them reach their full potential and makes every day a positive, fun experience.
We are so excited to continue getting to know the children and learning together. If you have any questions, please always ask, we are happy to help.
Here’s to a successful year!
